Winton Woods Intermediate School to Hold International Academic Olympics and Market Day

by Gina Burnett last modified Monday, February 08

It’s a lesson in economics at Winton Woods Intermediate School as sixth grade students hold an International Academic Olympics and Market Day on February 25 in the cafeteria and gymnasium. Students are making products and academic displays for a cultural museum on ten countries they are studying in their classrooms—Brazil, China, Dominican Republic, Egypt, India, Italy, Madagascar, Mexico, Russia, and Spain.

“The students are creating a miniature society that mirrors the real world,” said Winton Woods Intermediate School Economics teacher Irene Shedd.  “They form their own products, develop student run businesses, earn, spend, save, and purchase products with the school currency they have earned.  This program provides students with financial education while engaging them in core academic curriculum with hands-on learning activities.”

The students will be able to purchase products they made with the positive behavior points they have earned in the classroom.  The opening ceremonies will feature a parade of nations and will begin in the WWIS gymnasium at 8:30 a.m. on February 25.  Parents and community members are invited to attend these ceremonies.
